even be making him stronger. today, vice president joe biden said the administration's going to continue to make gun safety a priority. >> i know you've come to talk about a broad range of very important, challenging issues that are facing each of your cities and towns. as important as they all are today we have a more urgent and immediate call. and that is how to deal with the epidemic of gun violence in america. >> jennifer: so even though the public is behind gun safety measures broadly there is still this little matter of getting legislation through congress. house republicans are for a fight. they very well might win. they still do control the house afterall. even if reasonable republicans support pragmatic gun measures, when those reasonable republicans stay quiet the extremists speak for the party. here's, for example representative steve stockman, responding to the president's press conference. >> if he thinks these bills are good, his law is good, he should go through congress. he's not a king. reminds me of saddam hussein when he used kids. >> jennifer: the question

bill. we are so lucky to have barack obama and joe biden now. i think this was masterful. they hit all of the problem areas. i think it's a great start. you know, i'm disappointed in the news coverage. obama talked about the assault rifles and i wasn't sure if he was saying he thought they just should be outlawed outright. i got that from him. and what they would do about ones that were already out there. do you know anything about that? >> bill: well, there would be a ban on the sale of assault weapons going forward but there is no word about what to do about the -- i think i've seen maybe 20 million 40 million that are already out there in circulation or in the hands of gun owners. >> caller: oh, man. >> bill: that's a real, real problem. >> caller: that's -- >> bill: that's why i think we need a buyback provision like they did in australia. >> caller: buyback and if someone did want to have them, they could at least -- i think they should have to have insurance, too. handguns and everything. it costs $300 billion a year in medical costs for gun shot wounds in this country. >> bill:

in generations. the president was joined midday at the white house by vice president joe biden and some of the families of those 20 children and six staff members who were massacred at sandy hook elementary school. and he insisted that their loss will not go unheeded for a misguided notion of freedom. >> along with our freedom to live our lives as we will comes an obligation to allow others to do the same. when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us, we must act now. >> backed by children who wrote moving letters to him urging action after the newtown tragedy, the president signed 23 executive actions including steps to strengthen the existing background check system as well as proposals to improve mental health and school safety programs. he also called on congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. and make no mistake, the president knows this will not be easy. >> this will be difficult. there will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical assault on liberty. the only way we will be able to chang

what the president or joe biden have, would have stopped sandy hook. to claim this this could have stopped sandy hook, it's disturbing and misleading. and rahm emanuel now mayor of chicago, former chief of staff of the president, when he was chairman of the democratic national campaign committee had a strategy to recruit pro gun democrats to retake the house and guess what, they were successful. the president had a policy the first term not to touch the issue of gun control. and they're making conclusions that i think majority of americans don't agree with them. >> megyn: let's talk about the implications of the ad, it makes it like like john barrow is in favor of another shooter like lanza to shoot up a school. is it fair of them, an ad by a pro gun democratic politician, why didn't they use an image of the shooter? stick to the event if you want to remind us of newtown, not a democratic politician that-- >> the reason why the ad he put out is offensive to democrats, he's not saying it's supporting the second amendment, it politicizes almost fetishizing the guns and see it holding
